Applications are now open for a new edition of the ECODIM international course on marine microbiology
Postgraduate students from Latin America can apply until August 30 to participate in ECODIM XIII – Ecology and Diversity of Marine Microorganisms, an intensive international course that will take place between January 6 and 26, 2027 at the University of Concepción and the Huinay Scientific Station, located in the Comau Fjord, in Chilean Patagonia.
Organized by the University of Concepción, the San Ignacio del Huinay Foundation and the Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO), ECODIM brings together students and leading researchers every two years to offer an immersive experience in marine biosciences, combining master classes, fieldwork, laboratory training, bioinformatics and collaborative research projects.
The program aims to strengthen the training of future marine scientists by developing practical research skills, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary teamwork. For three weeks, participants explore topics such as microbial diversity, marine ecology, genomics, biogeochemical cycles, environmental microbiology, and bioinformatics analysis, working alongside an international team of specialists. The course culminates in the presentation of the results of the projects developed by the students themselves.
ECODIM has a long history of training advanced human capital. Since its inception, it has brought together students from various countries and a distinguished international faculty, establishing itself as one of the most renowned courses in marine microbiology in the region. This led to its being awarded the Innovation in Science Education Prize in 2015, granted by the Young Science Foundation and UNESCO.
The 2027 edition will begin with activities at the Concepción campus of the University of Concepción and will continue at the Huinay Scientific Station, a privileged environment for the study of marine ecosystems in Chilean Patagonia.
